Privatized Social Credit: Andrew Tate & His 41 Tenets
When Alex Jones and Milo Yiannopoulos were banned from social media, these were marketed as incidents that would only be reserved for rare cases. By the time Megan Murphy was banned from Twitter and Colin Wright removed from PayPal it was clear that a new social credit system had emerged where private corporations got to decide who was allowed to have a voice and which topics were acceptable for discussion. A social credit system can be defined as an infrastructure that gives an entity the ability to examine human profiles and give them ratings to gauge how desirable a set of humans is within a certain context. Based on the aforementioned desirability rating, a human can be blacklisted or whitelisted from activities based on thresholds and criteria set by the Social Credit System.
Although we have seen a government-run version of social credit emerging in China, the West will likely continue taking a more privatized route in implementing social credit. No one is safe, not even sitting American presidents as seen with the banning of Donald Trump - a move that was condemned internationally. Even small accounts like BIPOC Hate Tweets aren’t safe and have fallen victim to coordinated reporting campaigns. The strategy is to divide and conquer; first, controversies are generated using media machines, and the target is then de-platformed using the aforementioned controversies as reasoning. This is privatized social credit. One of the more notable recent examples of a privatized social credit system exercising its collective power has been the exorcism of Andrew Tate from all mainstream social media platforms. First, some background.
Andrew Tate, pictured above, is a former world champion kickboxer and son of a professional chess player, Emory Tate. Tate’s popularity skyrocketed over the summer of 2022 with Google searches of him briefly surpassing both Joe Biden and Donald Trump in mid-August as shown below.
Tate’s message was primarily spread in regions of the '“Manosphere” and focused on steps men can take to improve their lives, along with criticisms of feminist ideology. Controversy found Tate when an old video that appeared to show him beating a woman surfaced online. The woman in the video later clarified the actions in the prior video were consensual:
"I just wanted to let you know that this has all been a huge misunderstanding. I heard he got kicked out of the house because of it, which I find really unfair because it really was just pure game. That's what we used to do."
Regardless, Andrew Tate soon found himself banned from every major social media platform ranging from TikTok to YouTube and on Meta’s various social media platform offerings like Instagram and Facebook. In addition to social media, Andrew Tate has lost access to banks, Uber, Airbnb, and payment processors like Stripe. While social media bans are still authoritarian in nature, they make it clear that the objective is to silence an individual in order to stem the spread of a message; banning Tate from platforms like Uber and Airbnb does not serve the aforementioned purpose and seems more vindictive in its execution.
After his banning, Andrew Tate posted a video explaining events from his perspective. H provides context on some of the allegations that had been made against him, and he is now rebuilding his audience on Rumble. No matter how you may feel about Tate specifically, take a moment to imagine this: you wake up one day to find yourself locked out of social media, banks, payment processors, and other basic services. If rich and powerful figures like Tate are susceptible to being de-platformed by a privatized social credit system, what’s protecting the average individual? With this portion of the article concluded, ponder that final thought.
Without going into too much further op-ed analysis on his beliefs, we will simply share 41 tenets Andrew Tate outlined as embodying his core values in a video for readers to digest and formulate their own conclusions on Tate’s message.
